Past Tense was painted in 2005 onto wood paneled board and was an early foray into abstract. For someone who'd owned and worked in a commercial creative agency for 35 years, where everything had to be 'particular', to be able to explore pure creativity was a blessing. Past Tense has hints of stress ...

I'm a classically trained artist who left college and began running successful creative agencies as a commercial artist and designer over 35 years ago. Business was my life but I always dreamed of being able to express myself on a more creative level through painting. I'm not your typical 'artist' if there is such a stereotype, as I've spent years having to wear a suit and involve myself in meetings day-to-day. I also spent years throwing myself around on the rugby field running into people, which isn't what you'd normally associate with a peaceful creative person! Luckily, now I can just spend time coaching rugby which is far less dangerous. It's a bit of a journey of discovery for me as over the years I've held so many ideas back in my head, now it's about unlocking them and seeing where this journey leads? I have long regarded the Cornish school of art and the art scene around St. Ives in Cornwall as a real inspiration. If I was able to be a fraction as successful as the likes of the late Trevor Bell, or Naomi Freers, I'd be very happy. From my studio high up in the Mendip Hills in Somerset, I'm surrounded by rolling green hills and animals and the most stunning view of Chew Valley lake, one of the world's best Trout fisheries. That is a big distraction for me, as a keen fisherman myself, there is something quite special about the water it's movement and the colours that it creates - plus of course the wonderful Trout that swim within it! Anyway, my journey begins. I'm looking to try and organise some shows in the very near future, so watch this space.
