My work is about composition and abstract shapes. I want my paintings to grab a viewer from across the room and draw them in. I am using food in this series, because I love to cook and food is something that is familiar to everyone. But this series could really feature anything, because it is about the abstract interlocking shapes created by sun and shadows, bold blocks of color, and the beauty of the food and translucent elements. I first had the thought of doing this series, sitting outside in the morning sun drinking my coffee. The length and color of the shadows really caught my attention. Then I thought, what if that kind of light were passing over ordinary objects, or through translucent dishes? Wouldn’t those shadows and projected colors create some interesting abstract compositions? So I gathered colorful objects from my kitchen and spent a few weeks taking photographs. The compositions are arranged to include light and dark spaces that interact and interlock. The paintings feature fresh produce on translucent dishes in strong morning light. From a distance these could be abstract non-objective paintings, but up close you see the details of the fruits, vegetables, linens, dishes, and kitchen utensils. Using basic principles of composition, I am creating something that draws you in to look deeper.

I paint 5 days a week at my studio at the Pendleton Art Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. My studio is open by appointment and on the last Friday of every month . You will find me on the fifth floor in studio 510A. I am the daughter of an industrial engineer and an artist. My dad was the engineer, and I learned about spatial relationships and design from watching him build model airplanes. Both parents encouraged me to draw and to make things with my hands. My mother was a creative person. It was the 70s, so she was home with us. She taught me to sew, which is something that I still love to do. I graduated from Ohio University and worked as a graphic designer for 20 years. In 2007, I trained at the Midwest Culinary Institute in Cincinnati, to be a personal chef. I operated a small catering and personal chef business for 4 years. Since 2013, I have had the opportunity to refocus my career path, again, and to make fine art. I am a painter working in several media. In 2020, I started a large series of still life paintings in oil and cold wax. The perspective of those paintings interested me very much, and I have continued to create paintings that are similar, but done in torn paper. I do a lot of commission work. It is a joy to work with clients to create special paintings for their homes. We sit down and talk about ideas. I design a concept, then provide images to help the client visualize the concept. Once we arrive at a plan, I create the original artwork and document the process as it unfolds. My paintings are held in private collections in the US (Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio and Texas) and in Milan, Italy.
