Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in GdaÅ„sk History of Faculty of Painting goes back to the very beginning of the Academy, legendary "Sopot School", which founders were mostly painters. Krystyna Łada-Studnicka, Józefa Wnukowa, Hanna Å»uÅ‚awska, Janusz StrzaÅ‚ecki, Juliusz Studnicki, Jacek Å»uÅ‚awski and a sculptor Marian Wnuk. It is worth to mention them here, because they were great artists and personalities, and our professors had pleasant and grateful memory of them. During sixty years of history of the faculty, among many famous and distinguished artists, connected with the Academy, we can find Aleksander Kobzdej (1947-1951), StanisÅ‚aw Teisseyre, who worked from 1950 to 1965, StanisÅ‚aw MichaÅ‚owski (1950-1953), StanisÅ‚aw Borysowski, who ran the Painting Studio from 1953. Jan Cybis worked from 1955 to 1957. Piotr Potworowski ran the Studio of Painting after his return from England that is from 1958 to 1962. Teresa PÄ…gowska started her artistic career here. Among many outstanding artists and teachers, whose lives were permanently connected with the history of the Faculty and Academy, Zygmunt Karola, Rajmund Pietkiewicy, Maksymiliam Kasprowicz, WÅ‚adysÅ‚aw Jackiewicz, Kazimierz Åšramkiewicz, Kazimierz Ostrowski and Jerzy ZabÅ‚ocki ought to be mentioned. Our latest history consists of recently retired professors: Hugon Lasecki, WÅ‚odzimierz Łajming, Kiejstut Bereźnicki, Andrzej Dyakowski. The history of the Faculty was their own history at the same time. Their students are not only today's teaching staff, educating the next generation of painters, but also the active artists, who create both in Poland and abroad. Looking through the publications, we can observe the role played by the Faculty of Paining in creating the faculty's character. Initially independently, and between 1947 and 1950 it created the structure together with Interior Design. From 1968 to 2007 the Faculty existed and the Faculty of Painting and Graphics. That co-existence had strong impact on the condition of both fields of studies, giving them the full artistic concomitance. Independence which has been gained defines new goals and new directions for the Faculty to build its new identity, based on great tradition and contemporary attitude to didactic work.
