Claudine Loquen was born in the town of Sainte-Adresse in France's Seine Maritime region. From a very early age, she was immersed in a family atmosphere fairly bursting with artistic inspiration. She soon traded in her dolls for paintbrushes, encouraged by her mother, a cultivated, loving woman who would tenderly watch over me as I painted until 3 a.m when I was but nine years old. Such a propensity for the plastic arts naturally led Claudine Loquen to study at the Lyce Claude Monet in Le havre and then at the School of Fine Arts in Rouen, years of discovery during which she found her first masters : Dufy, Chagall, Chaissac, Frida Kahlo, Alose and Marie Laurencin, to name but a few. It's Monet's vision of Berthe Morisot on her balcony, however, that is seared most deeply in Claudine Loquen's mind. Today, Claudine Loquen principally paints on canvas or wood with acrylic and oil paints. She attaches increasing importance to the effects created by her materials. Strongly drawn to proponents of Art Singular, which values the imagination over technique, feeling over form, and the irreverent and irrational above all.Guided by an imagination full of images and child memories, inspired by literature and poesy, irresistibly pulled by the enlightening powers of her paintbrush, the artist depicts historical moments or scenes of sheer tranquillity, drawing us as far from the here-and-now into a personal, poetic world.Claudine Loquen senses an impending revolution in her own way of painting, a spontaneous, natural evolution that echoes the inspiration guiding her brush. If I ask why she paints, she would probably respond :What else would I paint ?.Jean-Louis Redval, Agence Semios, Paris 2004The roots of what is now known as marginal art lie in forms of creativity that were considered impossible to categorise as early as the Renaissance art characterised by awkward lines, over-bright colours, and failure to obey the rules of proportion. Some of the greatest artists of the twentieth century were inspired by marginal art in all its forms folk art, outsider art, childrens drawings, and primitive art. They saw these marginal expressions of creativity as welcome sources of creative freedom, where there were no limits to the boldness of an artists imagination. But how to begin exploring the wild frontiers of imagination? It was not always easy for a young artist, as everyone has their own unique voice.Claudine Loquen turned her back on her formal training in the fine arts.
