ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is a Fieldfare, "that come and go on winter's chilling wing, and seem to share no sympathy wi' spring" (John Clare, 1824). It's a thrush, same genus as the Song Thrush and Blackbird in Europe, the American Robin in North America. It's somewhat influenced by a 1958 painting by Nathan Oliveira, a homage to him even. His painting was of a reclining nude, not a bird. But it seemed like a bird to me: I frequently see unintended birds in other people's paintings! It's 54 x 41 cm, oil on cradled panel. If you want some understanding of why I paint birds that speak, please see my website.

My art imagines what birds might say if they could speak our language. They would fear and hate us, surely: we are fast destroying their planet. They would tell us to stop before it's too late. But perhaps they'd frame that with love. I think they'd frame it with love. Contact: raphus.art@gmail.com
