IRIS Painting

I studied Fine Arts at university. I also studied abstract painting informally with mentor and friend Frank Hursh of Black Mountain College. I eventually moved to New Mexico, where I established my studio and worked full time with abstract painting. I was a juried member of the Santa Fe Society of Artists - was a gallery artist at a Canyon Road gallery and a downtown Santa Fe gallery. Additionally I have worked with several New Mexico architects and designers as designer and architectural illustrator in 3D digital media when 3D media was just becoming of interest to architects and engineers. In 2009 I re-established my studio /workshop in the village of Corrales New Mexico on the banks of the Rio Grande between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. I am an abstract artist and have a deep interest in Zen. The studio work I've engaged for the last several years works something like the zen koan. IE: A painting is teased (with intention) out of mystery as a kind of vital energy known directly and viscerally. The painting process will be of one irreducible flow and depends on the felt vitality of it’s parts going together. To make this painting visible it will be acted out with tools of the visual artists’ craft. It is acted from the gut, not the brain. If it is to have real presence at all, the painting must be allowed to be known from within the well of mind that we all share. This is where art “speaks” from.
