Josephine Turalba is an interdisciplinary artist based between Manila and Boston, explores issues of divide and convergence within a volatile geo-political world order, her works reflect on the politics of violence and dynamics of infliction and trauma, depicting spaces where empathy translates into healing. She negotiates influences from different cultures – foreign influences on Philippine culture and viceversa, taking on an investigative approach to place and time (in history and the present), in relationship to a sense of self; using the female body as a ‘site’ of/on/ around/for her sculptural pieces to speak of history and speak to different spaces in society. Turalba’s nomadic relation to various forms of media, including performance, installation, experimental video, photography, tapestry, and painting, allows her to explore her obsessions with socio-political narratives, myths and personal histories. She holds an MFA in New Media from Transart Institute New York (USA) and Donau Universität Krems (Austria). Currently a research fellow at the MIT Future Heritage Lab, she has served as Dean at the School of Fine Arts and Design at the Philippine Women’s University. Her works have been exhibited at ICA Singapore, the 2016 London Biennale, European Cultural Center in Venice, Italy (concurrent with the 56th Venice Biennale 2015), 12th Cairo Biennale, Egypt; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA; Hofburg Innsbruck, Austria; Arter Space Istanbul, Turkey, Yuchengco Museum, Manila; Indonesia; VII Tashkent Biennale of Contemporary Art, Uzbekistan; 2nd Izmir International Biennal, Turkey; 2012 Santorini Biennale, Greece; M1 Singapore Fringe Festival; Malta Contemporary Art Center; the Cultural Center of the Philippines and at the Metropolitan Museum Manila.
