Cornwall based artist Gemma Lessinger is mesmerized by the sea and her textural artworks are an ode to the wild, powerful and healing properties of time spent by the ocean. With her use of sea salt and sand her paintings are infused with the elements, which she collects and mixes into her pigments. She instinctively portrays the feeling of a beach, tidal pool, or hidden cove, using texture to capture the momentum of breaking waves. Gemma builds texture in the white water of her pieces by repurposing offcuts of fiberglass from surfboard manufacturing, enabling the shaper to be one step closer to being zero waste. These offcuts would end up in landfill if not up-cycled into Gemma’s paintings. This sustainable focus is an ethos Gemma is developing further, re-purposing old surfboards and skateboard decks into ‘canvases’ to create new original works and limited edition prints. With every sale made through Gemma’s business she donates towards the environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage and the lifesaving work of the RNLI.
