When painting portraits Tom’s natural interest in his subjects allows him to produce canvasses that are imbued with subtle detail and resonate with personality. They are usually portrayed as life size so that the viewer can connect more easily with the emotional intention of the work. His more general figurative work allows him to introduce elements inspired by poetry and classical literature rather than focusing solely on the personality of the sitter. It also gives an opportunity to focus on the physicality of the figure in paint and how paint is used. Whilst being a confirmed painter he sustains his interest in the blurring of boundaries between disciplines with recent drawings referencing archaeology and geology, and mixed media work relating to memory, nostalgia and childhood.
