Carolin Okon is a contemporary German artist. Her area is painting and sculptures made of steel in public spaces. Okon grew up in the GDR and started painting out of necessity in 1988. It was a time of absolute scarcity. Art books were only available in black and white and photos of stars from the western world were forbidden. On the black market she bought overpriced posters of Elvis and James Dean and began painting portraits of her idols. Since there were no canvases, she painted on wood, cardboard, fabric and also on a GDR flag. After completing her media training (2003) in "Film & TV, Production and Management" at the Adolf Grimme Academy, she decided to work entirely at the easel. Studying art was never an option for Okon. She loves the challenge: to remain authentic and yet always develop further. To experiment, to fail and to grow. Without rules! Without other people's values! Free! Okon has exhibited her works in the USA, France, England, Austria and most recently in China.
