Ashley Nieuwenhuizen was born in South Africa and moved to Scotland in 1998. Much of her ideas have come from growing up in both rural and urban environments, fascinated by intense landscapes and its inhabitants. Developing her artistic practice over the years, she moved to Dundee and began her Fine Art Studies at Duncan of Jordanstone. It was at University that she began to focus on her background, bringing her interest of animal and human realms into her work. Staying true to her subject matter though the use of raw materials, Ashley began using various media, concentrating on film, performance, writing and sculpture, to visually portray her ideas. Recently awarded the William Sangster Phillips Fund, Dundee Visual Artists Award and the Sir William Gillies Bequest Award, Nieuwenhuizen continues to develop her practice on the MFA at DJCAD. "Man becoming animal is the foremost investigation into the context of my Fine Art practice. My current analysis however, has driven me to create a decided relation with the viewer, be that their interaction or response to my practical outcomes. In the transformation of our external bodies we are able to depict our interpretation or resemblance of the animal, thus linking our physicality with the psychological conscience. It is this philosophy which I aim to transfer onto the observer in order for him to gain insight into my own performative actions: the transference of experience from artist to viewer through the communication of an artistic idea.

Working in printmaking, sculpture, performance and photography, I am able to create narratives between various works and outcomes; influencing a realm of the grotesque and bizarre, science and magic, animal and man."
