About The Artwork

A pencil drawing on Fabriano paper by David Carter supplied with a white core picture mount and backing.. Elley and I live in a small cottage ( see "Elleys Cottage drawing") with 2 foot thick walls in a small hamlet set deep amongst the pastures and wind blown broken trees of our North Yorkshire valley. Outside our back door you walk out into a rolling expanse of green pasture and skylines of shattered and aged trees.. My drawing though shows this cold Winter's day as being something slightly different and humbly records a major event in the yearly cycle of life in this valley. The sheep flock that lives in the valley has come down to the cattle grid to wait for the farmer. This is March and the cold North wind still cuts through this valley like a razor but "our valley ladies" have come because they are all in lamb and soon they know they will be " gathered" and moved to complete the cycle of life in the warmth and care of the farmers hay barn. The flock will be there at 6am tomorrow morning as I set of for work in the Lake District , more than likely they'll be there when I get back. This drawing is a record of their vigil . I don't know what triggers this instinct within the flock to seek warmth and shelter more than at any other time but I do know when they come back the flock will be much bigger, have more life, more energy and more noise at first light .. Eventually there will be gambling packs of lambs eager to explore, run and get stuck in any place they can find that they shouldn't be in.. ... amazing new life starting all over again..wonderful. "Our Valley Ladies" have set the scene..

David Carter is the self made owner of the UK's leading manufacturer company of picture mounts who works in the English Lake District and lives in the Yorkshire Dales. . Trained as a graphic designer in the 1970's by 1984 David was one of the leading illustrators recording in acrylic paint the life and times of the shepherds and native Herdwick sheep hill flocks of sheep in the English Lakes. His original paintings grace the walls of the great and the good as far afield as the USA and the UK. Today with a grown family and a new life David is creating a series of detailed pencil drawings that reflect the people and the landscapes that are there all around him with the love of his family, his partner and the gentle Dales and rugged mountains of the Lakes. His first drawing "High Mountain Days" a dedication to his son and a reflection as to whether he can reach back in time to the high peaks of his exemplary standards of 30 years ago. Like the mountains he loves .. slow and steady back to the top..
