This piece was directly inspired by a David Attenborough documentary showing the devastation of the melting ice caps. I was equally moved by the destruction of the ice as I was inspired by the beauty of the colours, shapes and repetitive patterns of the fragmented ice floating on the water. It left...

I draw in permanent fine line pens and alcohol markers on smooth Bristol board. My drawings are often unplanned, influenced by patterns and shapes in nature. Each drawing is my form of art therapy, a source of relaxation and meditation. I enjoy letting the direction form organically, allowing my mind time to wander and inspiration to influence my choice of colour and shape. I find the repetitive flow of drawing curves and cell like shapes calming and meditative, the perfect antidote to the stresses of life. I was first influenced to draw in cell like shapes after discovering artwork by Ernst Haeckel in 2018. This led to a deep dive into looking at images of microscopic sea life and micrographs of plant cells. I became fascinated by the intricate patterns and shapes hidden to the naked eye. These have now become a subconscious influence in all my work combined with inspiration I find while exploring the natural environment where I live in the South Downs National Park, Hampshire (UK). I particularly love exploring forests, heathland and beaches. I’m also interested in the similarities of natures patterns in seemingly unconnected forms and dimensions from micrographs of plant cells to areal images of the world’s surface. Nature is an awe inspiring source of interest and beauty that never ceases to surprise and inspire me.
