Jamie Frost has been working with the figure for nearly a decade, particularly in the soulful medium of portraiture. He won an award from the Society of Portrait Sculptors for his carving and has exhibited with them on Cork Street several times since. He often works to commission and makes work for sale. His work as a carver has clearly influenced his drawings. These are sculptor's drawings- corporeal, weighty, voluminous, communicating form. “We are complicated creatures with a myriad of feelings, drives and perceptions. Yet we are creatures still. At some point all that energy, frustration, joy, triumph, wonderment, confusion, has to be found in the lift of a finger or the purpose in a stride.” There's also a subtler relationship to carving, something to do with the irrevocable nature of making pen marks and removing chippings. The processes are perceived as permanent and this imbues the works with a focussed energy. His work is pointedly meticulous and reflects an intense relationship between the body and the person. "I insist on working with the live model wherever possible. Spending large amounts of time considering someone inevitably imbues the work with a sense of spirit, leading quite naturally to an interest in portraiture. My figures seem particularly ‘fleshy’ and physical, a compelling adjunct to the intimacy of depicting a person."
