Who didn't see the banana-performance? Or should I say: the strictly directed marketing-event? When I first posted NOW it’s ART, someone reacted with “now copying is art?” This gentleman saw my fat wink to the overcommercialized Art World as copying. But then: what did I copy? I certainly didn’t copy a banana attached to the wall with some duct tape. I’m certainly no Magritte (Ceci nest pas un banana), and I’m using an ordinary screw instead of duct tape. Did I copy the idea of attaching a banana to the wall? No, I did make a nice, small, solid bronze sculpture depicting . . . So did I copy the concept? But what concept? I thought the concept was: Let’s have a funny idea and show the art world how hollow and over-commercialized it is, by using a lot of marketing power, thus making a lot of curators, buyers and artists say: “What a great idea to tell the art world how hollow and overcommercialized it is: "THIS MUST BE ART.” Well, this idea, this concept is now about 50 years old and way too much copied. In my humble opinion, it’s time to get rid of this concept-as-art. It’s not new, it’s not original, it doesn’t change the (art) world, it doesn’t change the way people look at art. Sorry, it really doesn’t do anything at all (besides increasing someones bankaccount). (And it’s an insult to all those who try to enlighten the world a tiny little bit, by creating art). So Art World: stop being masochistic. We know in some places the art world is hollow and over commercialized. After all these years, no-one has to prove that anymore.

With FrozenSteel as name, Wichert van Engelen makes bronze and steel sculptures in the Openbare Werkplaats Amsterdam. Wichert is not a conceptual artist. He stands for craftsmanship as an inseparable part of being an artist. Wichert realizes his bronze sculptures entirely himself: from concept / idea, via design, the making of ceramic and plaster molds, to the casting in bronze. The result: bronze statues with stunning detail. In the bronze statues, Wichert captures the beauty of natural details in a hyperrealistic way: The Splendor of Nature in the Power of Bronze. In addition, he regularly makes light excursions: Art with a Wink. In the steel statues, Wichert "freezes" movement in the hard material. Skating and cycling are regularly recurring themes. The studio is an inspiring environment with craftsmen working in wood as well as steel. When in Amsterdam, you are more then welcome to come and take a look
