August 1815 when Napoleon attached the Russians at Borodino, a battle which had no winner, and both the Russians and Napoleons forces had many lost soldiers. But on the painting we can only imagine a valley, with a river, and a river is not a woman, even though Joyce in Finnegans Wake in his tale has introduced ALP, a character signifying the flood-woman. But the Wake also has the meaning of 'passing into death' and 'rising from sleep', something which was all happening in 1815 during the Battle of Borodino. In the Wake another Battle is mentioned, the Battle of Boyne fought in 1690 between two rivals communities (Desposed English/King James II and English-Scottish accenders to the Crowns of Dutch Prince William of Orange and his Wife Mary II in 1688). This battle took place across the river Boyne near the town of Drogheda in the east of Ireland, and resulted in the victory of William. The symbolic importance of this battle has made it one of the best-known battles in the history of the British Isles and a key part of the folklore of the Orange Orders. I imagine that we do not see any soldiers or any battle, but the colors tell us that we might be in a river valley, and orange order is what protestants still dream, and fight for, as the prefered, governing institution. But since this war picture is not about war, I have selected the anti-title: "A river is not a woman"...
