My mother's home was full of little old lady stuff. Ceramic thimbles, ceramic plates, ceramic commemorative spoons, a celebration of royal weddings, babies, the battle of Britain (carefully edited to disinclude the polish contribution, maybe too many r’s and z’s to fit on a thimble). Her sketchy selective ceramic history of this sceptered isle always irritated me because if it's mawkish simplicity, particularly about WW2. Then in 2020, locked down I had a lovely time. I could use my studio whenever I liked, the spring was spectacular, the blue sky planeless. It was the happiest I have ever been. Meanwhile, ten minutes walk away people were drowning in their own bodies in Homerton Hospital being tended by unprotected health workers in shoddy PPE. I started to wonder about how this was going to be chunked up in advertisements for whatever the daily express will look like in 40 odd years, selling memorabilia of this strange, strange period. I made this piece from an analogue image taken in a photo-booth. This was then rephotographed and printed on to a charity shop ceramic using liquid photographic emulsion. The platter had one been part of a fashionable, desirable complex set of ceramic ware that spoke a lot about the status of the owner. Now it is decoupled from its meaning, the processes and rituals around it are for the most part gone from our lives and the factories that once produced this ware to a clamoring market are long since derelict and sometimes repurposed into desirable lifestyle enhancing objects.
