Invisible lobster boats moor in the foggy bay. At four am sharp the sound of engines rumble through my cottage windows at the Golden Apple Studio in Harrington, Maine. Morning fog blurs the line between ocean shore and water. There is so much movement that I can not see, so much activity that occurs atop the water and beneath it. As the fog lifts in the bay, colors and forms take shape; the florescent pink buoys and vermilion orange fishing boats magically appear along with yellow lobster cages, golden rockweed, weathered planks and wind beaten-wharf sheds. A quarter mile down the dead end dirt road I discovered a wooden and shack and fishing wharf of lobstermen with rubber overalls and rubber boots. I desired to paint their early mornings at the docks, seeking to capture the tradition and beauty along with their labor. This work is 11x8.5 on 14x11 paper

Rachael Van Dyke is a full-time artist creating abstract landscape and figurative work inspired by living off the grid in the Blue Ridge mountains and traveling abroad. Van Dyke is an avid artist-in-residence and has participated in national and international residencies. These residencies create new boundaries for her work and encourage an alteration of technique and expression. These boundaries also create stimulation as she is forced to understand and come to terms with her limitations. Being open to a new color palette or a new visual language to express the land and culture is necessary. Rachael chooses to explore the region through hiking or bicycling, visiting museums and historic sites, and trying her hand at engaging with local residents. Each body of work is influenced by place and tells a story of the people and land that she’s encountered. Instagram @vandyker
