In the summer of 1961, the historic Freedom Riders, a group of black and white activists, challenged the legally segregated buses and bus stations of the south by refusing to travel separately. Thirteen riders left on two Greyhound buses en route to New Orleans from Washington, DC. Joan Trumpauer Mullholland was one of them. Many were jailed and beaten by the police for their efforts. Doing what is right doesn't often yield immediate positive results. Martin Luther King is remembered for his inspiring quote, “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”
