I work from found and created photographs. Having previously painted many nudes I find it fun to source images of ladies derrière's. This image captured my attention due to the relaxed pose of the model and her "Australia" shaped backside. I particularly liked the fact that she was emerging from a dark background - giving her a sense of poise and strength. I initially painted my board with a Golden Medium that gives movement and texture to the surface. I prefer to give the surface of my boards some texture as when you look at any painting from across the room I believe it is nice to see movement and brushwork. When I painted this image I tried a number of different coloured backgrounds but eventually settled on the deep blue-black - which is hard to see in the photograph of the piece. The colour suited the emerging figure and was after all one of the main things I liked about the image in the first place. I don't typically paint dark backgrounds, however I really enjoy this piece. When looking for a backdrop to best display this piece it looked amazing and could honestly suit almost every possible scene so long as it could physically fit! In this painting I've used professional quality artist acrylics and mediums. As with most of my paintings I personally mount it on an "inbuilt" frame and then paint the painting as the frame and board as one unit. The painting is ready to hang with a fitted wire and signed on the back. Feel free to discuss the framing with your preferred framer to ascertain their recommendations on the piece if you'd like to formally frame the piece. As this is a semi-large painting I recommend hanging it directly from the two D rings that I supply on the back of the painting, or from no less than two hooks from the wire. Noting that the painting mount is made of wood and is subject to environmental influences such as humidity which may create short term movement in the board/mount hence why I recommend 2 hooks holding the painting directly to the wall.

Australia
Kerry was born in Wudinna, a remote and tiny dusty town in South Australia, in 1972. This was a time and culture where women weren't allowed in the local pub and were expected to quit work when they got married. She distinctly recalls seeing articles about Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol as a teenager but thought the art world was a world where she couldn't belong - girls were supposed to marry farmers and have children. After a diversion into a "sensible career" and motherhood, Kerry went back to her passion and was conceptually trained through the South Australian School of Art in 2012, with a Bachelor of Visual Art, Specialisation Painting. During her studies, she turned to her love of stencil-making and action painting techniques with acrylic paint and created her own style. Kerry won the UniSA Medal for her outstanding academic and artistic results, and in 2013 her artwork was selected by top South Australian art-aficionado's, including the then Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Nick Mitzevich (now director of the National Gallery of Australia), to participate in The Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition - an incredible honour for any SA graduating tertiary art student. Today she works as an underwater photographer and painter from her home studio in Darwin, Northern Territory. She has participated in many group and solo shows. Her artwork is held in private collections in New Zealand, The United States, Switzerland, Germany, Hong Kong, and all-around Australia. She was selected as a Finalist in the 2021 Bluethumb Art Award, and her upcoming projects include a two-month residency in Germany, which will be followed by her first international solo show. She has also just been selected as a Finalist for The Percival Photographic Portrait Prize 2024. Her mission is to uplift women with her art – this is the engine that fires her entire practice.
