“The great gator” Codex Laud, sheet 14. brown. Digitally enhanced by MM on orange background in January 2022. Magic and mystery of the ancient Mexican worldview are manifest in this pictogram of the Codex Laud, in my view the work of the most gifted Tlacuilo of ancient Mexico we know. The great gator, monster of the Earth, extends himself into the tree of jade and flowers. Tonatiuh, the Sun god and a jaguar, a nocturnal killer, are sitting on the gator and a hummingbird, symbol of a warrior fallen in battle, sucks a flower, sign of love and glory. My photobook “Ñundeui, al pie del cielo”, published in 2008, illustrates with handsome, topless Indian women of the late sixties an ancient Mexico that has disappeared. Apparently everybody likes the photographs, but the prehispanic poetry and the pictograms of the book went unnoticed. For a second edition I currently enhance the pictograms by applying colors, textures and depth to their outlines. The result is a celebration of an awe inspiring ancient cosmovision. The strange beauty of Aztec pictograms fascinates with its magic and mystery. For Western sensibilities they are truly exotic and psychedelic. It is a joy to find ways to highlight their appeal and, hopefully, to thrill with their beauty and exotic worldview. The 50 cm print comes in a limited edition of 9. Title, author and year of manufacture are included on the print. The print comes with a 1 cm white border. Made to order on archival cotton paper in 10 days plus shipping. As an industrial photographer from Cologne, Germany, based since 1967 in Mexico City, I used my craft for decades to document scenes and subjects in sharp, detailed and well lit images. Back in the seventies, when simulating views of other planets, I was looking for a different perception of reality and found it with infrared color film. Today I enjoy a creative freedom similar to that of a painter. With the right combination of photograph and digital manipulation I can create images that are a tribute to imagination and beauty. Starting in 2019 I present on Saatchiart 15 collections as a synopsis of my photography, some digitally remastered and others digitally modified, for sale as archival inkjet prints in different sizes.
