Collage including acid-free tissue paper, acrylic paint, floral wallpaper from the 1960s, acrylic marker and the front cover of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. Created on the inside cover of a hardback book. What I am aiming for here is a sensual balance of strong and subtle colours and shapes. All the elements are carried along with each other from left to right under the spreading branches of a bonsai. The colour of the book binding adds to the strong oriental feel, a play against the culture of Europe in the title and the pastel flowers. The collage has been treated to archival standards to preserve the colours of the paper. The book cover has been sealed with acid-free PVA and Golden Gac 100. The paper has been coated on both sides with Golden soft gel medium and protected with two coats of Golden UV satin varnish. The cover is from the book 'Selections of French Prose and Verse Illustrating the Romantic Movement" by Alfred T. Baker (1923). Signed on the reverse with description and title.

You’ll usually see me thinking about composition, playing with pattern and testing spatial relationships, that sort of thing. As for anything else I think about how it affects all the above. I enjoy looking for unlikely structures and trying out fleeting interractions. The question of balance is never far away. When it comes to meaning, the torn and faded materials in my collages show where man has been. I suppose everything reflects an unidealised view of humanity. But I’m also attracted to the opposite, the wide expanses of nature (especially the sea) where there’s not much humanity at all. My influences may not be apparent… I keep coming back to Cézanne and Matisse.
