In this bold, colorful still life oil painting the idea of picnics are examined. Dynamic motifs and a palette of bright cheerful hues capture the artful beauty of yellow daffodils on a red, white and blue check cloth. However, in this setting the picnic takes place indoors as is evident through the reference of a painting in the background in equally vibrant colors. The inspiration for this painting came through friends/ fellow artists who were creating works around food and meals. Given the pandemic had begun the subject matter appealed to me and bringing a picnic indoors and into my studio was a way to express some feelings surrounding being kept home. There is a festive and joyful spirit within the painting. This is something I have needed to focus on during this time of change and uncertainty. The painting has a strong sense of design as well as visible brushwork. It's a treasure of color, expression and texture with a very modern influence. This is a signed original and it was painted on a gallery wrapped canvas. The sides are finished so the artwork can be hung framed or unframed.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
