Lion Mher is a hero who appears in the epic poem Daredevils of Sassoun, which tells the story of four generations of brave warriors who defended their homeland from foreign invaders. Lion Mher is the father of David of Sassoun, the leader of the third generation. One of the most striking features of the painting is the use of Armenian ornaments to decorate the border. The background of the painting represents various scenes of the Armenian culture. The ornaments in the painting are mostly red, blue, and yellow, which are commonly percieved as colors of Armenian culture.
