About The Artwork

This carpet tells a story about a jour- ney of thought and value. In Belarus, both the former and the latter are never fundamental and static. Here, it’s about a very short moment of absolute solitude of a vagabond on the road when hitchhiking didn’t work and the car that almost stopped suddenly left and went off into the blue, leaving a burning mark of shaken faith in hu- manity in the traveller’s soul. Delacroix’ painting “Liberty Leading the People” is easy to recognise. But here, Liberty has no one to lead. Our Liberty, who is not surrounded by rep- resentatives of the young bourgeoisie and does not have her own Gavroche, looks helpless. The images of female traders refer to the “hard Belarusians”, who sold flowers while the August marches were being dispersed or who were fishing in the middle of a burning forest during the spring burning of last year’s grass. On the left, there is a remake of an icon entitled “The Ascension of St. Elijah” by an unknown artist, which can be found at an Orthodox church in the village of Latyhava somewhere near Vitebsk. This 18th-century paint- er has yet to wait for the acclaim he deserves. Icons from this series tell absolutely human stories disguised in “sheep’s clothing” composed of sacred biblical tales. This is why St. Elijah is here. He is taking a bucket of earthly gifts with him. He is rushing into heav- en, taken there alive, in his fiery Uber driven by an angel-driver. “God will help,” he says bidding Liberty farewell. Liberty will go through a moment of despair and make a decision. Another vote or staying Liberty in this environ- ment, which may not look as a “nice country to live in” yet, but it can no longer be called a swamp.
