About The Artwork

January of 2020 I spent in Ethiopia. It was one of the most influential and transformative trips in my life. I was deeply touched by the religious devotion of Ethiopians, by the beauty of their churches and people, by the tragic history of this very interesting country. The Ethiopians are among the first Christians in the world, the roots of the Christianity go back to the 4th century. People believe wholeheartedly and don't divide between everyday life and their faith. They literally live their faith. The country's most important pilgrimage place is Lalibela during Christmas. Lalibela is known to the world by its stunning ancient rock-hewn monolithic churches. It's considered very important for every Ethiopian to do the pilgrimage to this place at list once in a lifetime. This pilgrimage has to be down by foot. People from all over Ethiopia start their journey sometimes 2-3 months before Christmas (which they celebrate on the 7th of January) and walk all the way by foot. I arrived to Lalibela a few days before Christmas and was blown away by the thousands and thousands of people that were gathering around the churches growing in numbers each day. This is an original portraiture of one of those pilgrims. I was painting it on the site and then finished it later at home. It is a very dear picture to me, since I was deeply moved by the people, and it made me think of my own faith. I took a lot of pictures of those pilgrims, and am thinking of making the series of portraiture. Painted on a gallery wrapped cardboard (since it is easier to take with when I travel), the picture is already framed in a beautiful golden frame, and it comes ready to hang. It is signed in front with my initials in Georgian "Z" "Sh" (ზ.შ.). Thank you for your interest in my work.

Hello! Thank you for looking at my art and reading about me! My name is Zurab Sharvadze. I was born (in 1959) and raised in Tbilisi, Georgia and since my early childhood, I have always had a passion for art. My stepmother was the first one to notice it and gave me an easel and a set of oil paints when I was 14. Since then, my easel and I became inseparable. Following my father’s steps, I got my BS, MS and PhD in Nuclear Physics and worked at the Physics Research Institute until the collapse of the Soviet Union. Since the beginning of the 90s, I became the full-time artist. It was also the time of apprenticeship with some famous Georgian Artists like Temo Machavariani. The beautiful landscapes of my country Georgia are the constant source of my inspiration: Caucasus mountains, valleys with vineyards, meadows full of alpine flowers, pine forests, clear lakes and springs, the Black Sea. I also always take my portable easel and set of oil paints, when I travel abroad. From early spring through late autumn, you can often find me painting outside in the plein air in the mountains or the windy narrow streets of old Tbilisi. During the winter months is mostly studio work of still lives and portraits. The great artists that inspire me the most are Van Gogh, Cezanne, Gauguin, Degas, Mondrian. I participated in numerous Georgian and International Exhibitions. My works have been purchased by art collectors worldwide and can be found in the private collections in Great Britain, USA, Israel, Germany, France, Spain, and elsewhere. My paintings are all original and one-of-a-kind. All my canvases are built up with many layers of oil paints infused with flicks, drips and brushstrokes of paint resulting in a three-dimensional surface.
