About The Artwork

Curious calves from my on-going paintings of cows. This watercolor on Yupo is a expressionistic take on the subject, concentrating on the shapes, intense color, and textures that can be created on this surface. • Winner, Special Merit Award, Light, Space, & Time Open Art Exhibition, 2013 • ACYC 24th Annual Juried Competition 2013, Dalton Gallery, Rock Hill, SC • South Carolina Watermedia 37th Annual Exhibition, 2014

M.C. Churchill-Nash is a South Carolina based artist who has exhibited in juried and invitational shows throughout the Southeast and the US. She majored in art, with a concentration in painting, and holds AFA and BFA degrees from Sullins College and the University of Tennessee. At UT M.C. studied under watercolorists Carl Sublett and Richard Clarke. Further study includes portraiture classes with Rita Reed (teacher, portrait, and court artist) and workshops with Charles Kapsner (painter and fresco artist). Her primary media is watercolor but she also works in mixed media, pen & ink, oil, and prismacolor. Both watercolor and pen & ink work have won awards during her career, and she is a Member in Excellence of the South Carolina Watermedia Society. ARTIST STATEMENT My approach to watercolor uses the subject matter, often animals, to explore shapes (positive and negative) and color contrasts. While fighting a tendency to get caught up in detail, compositions have become more compact with use of negative space for balance. Color schemes are often complimentary since I like the vibrancy they impart. Using plate surface bristol board, hot press watercolor paper, or yupo allows for vivid color and pigment that sits on the surface allowing more manipulation of the paint. When it will enhance the work gouache or prismacolor pencil will be added.
