This sculpture depicts Africa's mighty baobab tree, which is of great practical and spiritual significance across the continent. This sculpture is part of series of contemporary interpretations of the artist's observations on safari in Africa. It is based on charcoal drawings, which have been cut from stainless steel and then hand finished in the studio. The artist lives in Africa and has spent many years exploring Africa's wild spaces, visiting 20 African countries and countless wildlife reserves and safari camps. Baobab trees are so huge they often dominate landscapes and can be seen for miles around. Sadly in recent years many of the very largest baobabs have been dying. Because they are technically succulents, rather than trees, they have no rings to mark their age, but experts estimate some of these trees are 2000 years old. No-one knows the cause of their deaths, but it may be caused by climate change. The artist has drawn baobabs in Zimbabwe, The Gambia, Mozambique (where trees on the coast mark places where slaves were loaded onto ships), South Africa and Ghana. This sculpture is one of an edition of 8, and the rough concrete stands are included in the price.

South Africa
James Delaney is a South African artist working across multiple disciplines - printmaking, drawing, painting, sculpture - from a large studio in Victoria Yards near downtown Johannesburg. He has won several awards including BASA and SAIA, work is in collections including Merrill Lynch Bank of America, the Constitutional Court of South Africa and the City of Johannesburg, and numerous private collections. A lot of his work references the remnants of history in the world around us - wildlife which once roamed urban areas, or the stories told by architecture and doorways. He has always travelled a lot, both in the wilderness spaces of Africa and the built up cities of the world, working every year in New York. More recently he has become known for his work restoring The Wilds, a 40 acre park in central Joburg which had been largely abandoned, and where he has installed 100 sculptures which show the wildlife which once lived in these hills.
