Moon Mandala Sculpture

Part of my Metal Morphs series, where metal building components get repurposed to make organic shapes. The Mandala series number 13 items, of which half are still available. This one is called the Moon Mandala because the muted metal sheen reminded me of the moon. I have only used similarly colored metals such as aluminium and galvanised iron to create a unity in the sheen. Secondly, the centre of this piece is cratered and pockmarked like the surface of the moon (all other Mandalas have a perfect 7, 8, or 9 fold symmetrical centre). The sheen is lively and changes with different lighting conditions and viewing angles. Some of the parts are rounded, some are hard-edged, causing the light to reflect differently. By using repetitive elements spaced with tiny gaps the light becomes unearthly. It is the second Mandala of the series, where I was still experimenting with the engineering part. As a result this is the most densely packed Mandala of them all. Look closer at the centre and you see there is no more physical room to use more spokes. The density is such that the spokes stabilise each other by touching on the inside of the sphere. Look even closer and you see that the over all shape keeps refining and becomes ever more intricate the closer you examine it, just like a fractal. Not for outdoor use
