House of Cards 2234mm x 3901mm After 2020 there was a feeling that our plans are left to fate and end up being fake hopes. This is what I was trying to show in the House of Cards. The House of Cards represents good news that turns to false rumours. I was feeling plagued by these thoughts and so turned inwards for my research. I feel that this can often be caused by self-sabotage and this in turn caused by a negative devotion to humility. Inappropriate humility plays a huge part in keeping us down and underachieving, so that new greater levels cannot be achieved. The reference to ‘sticks and stones can break your bones but words can never harm me’ is interesting as the stick and stones are the very materials that are holding the sculpture in place. The illusion of making the sculpture stronger by using the weapons from a bullying scenario and using the reference of ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ But at anytime this can also just become a false hope and the house of cards could tumble.

I am an artist and ceramic designer working in Hampshire England. I originally come from South Africa where I studied Fine art for 4 Years and then studied Ceramic design for another 2 years. I work using thick impasto oil paint to create a feeling that the objects that I paint are more sculptural and have a life of their own. I have an interest in the interplay of colours between objects in the painting and work to create an energy and union of these objects through paint.
