Its function is to produce seeds through sexual reproduction. For plants, seeds represent the embryo that will germinate when it comes into contact with a suitable substrate; seeds are the main means by which spermatophyte species perpetuate and propagate. The typical flower is composed of four types of leaves modified, both structurally and physiologically, to produce and protect gametes: sepals, petals, stamens and carpels. It gives rise, after fertilization and by transformation of some of its parts, to a fruit that contains the seeds.
