ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Hong Kong is probably the most unlikely place to build a megacity. Regularly battered by strong typhoons, with almost twice the number of skyscrapers of Manhattan and being one of the densest cities on the planet, Hong Kong is built on difficult, mountainous terrain that rises sharply from the sea, creating jaw-dropping differences in height between streets, with green valleys and tall mountains sliding down right to the middle of the city. All this, of course, surrounded by thick jungle; this concrete city perched on cliffs and mountain sides is built back-to-back with lush tropical forest. The dozens of islands dotted around the territory are connected by viaducts, bridges and tunnels making a seamless passage between different areas of this sprawling city that pop up across the territory in valleys and reclaimed land where the terrain is more forgiving. Lack of available land for construction has forced developers to build uphill, way uphill. This hillside elevator, with an adjacent network of escalators and footbridges, links a number of housing estates scattered up at different levels of a steep hill allowing residents of the upper towers to effortlessly walk down to the shopping district located below, at sea level. Serge Horta is a documentary photographer based in Ho Chi Minh. He recently relocated to Vietnam after spending nearly two decades capturing the raw essence of life in Hong Kong. Through his academic training in architecture, he is able to capture impossible order amidst the chaos of cities. His photographs are the result of a hypnotic obsession with how different cultures live, adapt and interact with the built environment, from the perfectly manicured suburb to the sprawling slum. His extensive portfolio documents the metamorphosis of the urban landscapes in which he has lived or merely traversed - from Sydney to New York, London to Guangzhou. Amid noise and chaos, Serge manages to find moments of peace and silence.  Having photographed in over 100 countries, we see deeply personal and engaging human stories emerging from what’s often overlooked, making a powerful, penetrating impression on the viewer. Serge’s work is held in private collections in several countries including the United States, Australia, Hong Kong, The Netherlands, UK, Spain, U.A.E., France, and Switzerland.
