ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Originally shot for a travel feature on the annual Sámi Reindeer Migration in 2010 but not used by the magazine. Following the annual Sámi Reindeer Migration in Lapland (Arctic Sweden). This image was taken on the final day of the migration. The now weary reindeer start the final leg of their journey over the Sámi's sacred mountain. The temperature was around -24 degrees centigrade and within a few minutes there would be a complete white-out requiring all of the Sámi herders skills to get us down from the mountain. The migration is an epic journey by any standards and a way of life for the Sámi families spread across arctic Lapland. My aim is always to try and capture a moment of magic, transcending the everyday to express the epic nature of the migration, the feeling of otherworldliness that extreme cold and snow can bring and the beauty and isolation of the landscape in which the Sámi live and work. It was a privilege to experience the Sámi reindeer migration and to be with the family in their natural habitat and glimpse their ancient way of life which as with most nomadic peoples is now under threat.

Of his work Gary says; "I see my work as being in the Romantic tradition. My work has been described as cinema-graphic, otherworldly and emotionally charged. I love to take pictures, I'm interested in people, culture, society and a sense of place. I travel a lot and I am a romantic of sorts. I was once described as having a 19th Century sensibility. Maybe that is because I like nostalgia, found things and a touch of fantasy. My aim is to find magic in the everyday."
