“I am constantly amazed by man's inhumanity to man” – Primo Levi (Holocaust survivor). History time frame gave birth to numerous atrocities, crimes against humanity and genocides (The Holocaust, Armenian, Cambodian, Rwandan, Greek, Assyrian, Palestinian, Yazidis genocides, etc...) just to name a few recent ones. There is perhaps no single location representing all of history that better depicts pure evil, man’s greatest inhumanity to his fellow man, than the stark, cold set of buildings in southern Poland called Auschwitz-Birkenau. During WWII more than one million people, mostly Jews were executed there. Murdered in cold blood. The Nazis called it “the final solution of the Jewish question in Europe.” I made this painting with my bare hands, scratching with my fingernails the multiple thick layers of paints on canvas like the scratches that can be found on the wall of the gas chamber in the main Auschwitz camp.
