Sunfall Painting

In my work I investigate the principles of painting and drawing, with in particular the age-old Figur-Grund Principle: the question of how the (human) figure relates to the background and how to unite the two to take. The image is set up as a theater or film set, with the painted background as decor, in which (human) figures as actors play their part to have. This creates a “film still” in which the moment is just before or just before stopped after a dramatic event. Is the background the inner world of the figure, or is the figure placed in the background to interpret the meaning and scale of the landscape? I consciously opt for a recognizable, figurative and almost clichéd visual language. These archetypal images are deeply embedded in our image brain, them are familiar to us, they have settled. And precisely in that depth is the viewer receptive to a personal meaning or "story" from this visual language distillation that goes beyond the sum of its parts.
