About The Artwork
This painting is from my knight's series from 2009,10. The knights, locked in battle against a sugary background of hard-boiled sweets, show two concepts that are incongruous with one another, giving a sense of bitter-sweetness. During my knight series paintings I was drawing on the imagination of when I was playing with knights as a child, and it was at a time when I had just immigrated to Argentina. The idea of wearing armour brought to me so many different connotations... When I moved country, I felt as if I had lost my cultural armour that I was unaware of carrying until I found myself in a new social context. The hard-boiled sweets are also a reference to my childhood growing up in the UK in the 1980's.

Argentina
Simon Boyd, born in London 1978, studied Fine Art at Middlesex, 1997-2001. He has lived in Argentina since 2007. Simon has held solo shows in both Argentina and the UK; ‘The Jousters Banquet’ at the British Arts Centre, Buenos Aires, in 2009 and ‘Also Light…’ at Anteros Arts Foundation, Norwich, 2023 to name a few. He has also participated in the International Contemporary Art Biennial, Buenos Aires, in 2016. A key inspiration for the colour and depth of his work is the South American landscape of La Pampa. Simon's use of palette echoes the sense of vitality and purity the landscape there evokes.
