About The Artwork

This painting is inspired by greek mythology. The mermaid was said to be Alexander the Great's sister who once argued with him and he cursed her to live underwater. So, it seems that she is not just a monster but a tragic figure who lived by Alexander's shadow. She was cursed to become a sea monster and wonders about in the seas. When a sailor gives her the right answer to her question "is Alexander the Great alive" -which is "he lives and seizes the world"- then she is happy, otherwise she turns the ship upside down.
