The Unruly Gardener Stefanie L. Kirby’s floral series reflects an expressive, gestural sensibility that unleashes an awakening of the senses. This floral series challenges the viewer’s perspective to interpret abstract organic shapes that metamorphous into the various whimsical and colourful interpretation of the well-known and beloved contemporary floral landscape. Artist Statement My intuitive sensibility and gestural aesthetics are heavily influenced by a raw dynamic painting style. When I am involved in the act of painting I often do not look at the image I am creating; instead, I am engaged in the process, the colours, the expressive marks and the humbling physicality of painting. I want to be fully immersed and not influenced by my conscious. It is important that there is a transference of energy, tension and movement of paint onto the canvas that is deeply personal to my expression and communication as an artist. I experience a subtle interplay between conscious thought and turning off all the noise in my head. This is challenging and pushes boundaries...the hardest part is to "not look" yet "see the feeling" and allow the paint to tell the story.

Stefanie started her creative journey as a contemporary jazz dancer and later switched to painting in her late teens where she fell in love with the fluid and luscious nature of paint. She obtained a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in 1997 from the prestigious Mount Allison University School of Fine Arts where she was awarded the title of best drawing in 1994. Stefanie has exhibited her artwork across North American and has been included in private and corporate collections globally.
