ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The first in a new series of artworks focusing on British seaside towns. I have longed to capture my own take on the charming bleakness of many British seaside towns. However, once bathed in sunshine, these places come alive, and the use of vinyl accentuates this like no other medium can.

Hand-cut vinyl artist working exclusively in the medium of sign-makers vinyl. With a background in advertising working as a Creative, Clark has carried forward many principles learnt from art directing. A super-keen eye for detail, matched with the boldness of vinyl, creates Pop Art-style works that have the impact of a great poster upon a billboard. The medium allows Clark to marry two techniques rarely seen together; that of using traditional hand-cutting skills with a modern material. The scalpel is his paintbrush, and the vinyl his palette, but with only a limited number of colours available, this restriction actually determines the style in which he works - one of breaking everything down in to individually coloured shapes. Colour and light are the main focus of Clark’s work, and the impact of vinyl as a medium allows him to accentuate the colours we can find in everyday surroundings. In a modern world of grey or silver buildings and cars, Clark wants to inject the daring use of colour seen in decades gone-by - most prominently the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s. From architecture and street furniture, through to swimming pools and skiers, the artworks want to remind us all of the ‘dollops of colour’ we have all around us, but may not always appreciate. Clark’s work never stays still, and continues to try new subjects and ‘canvases’ to fully exploit the potential vinyl has as a medium. The multitude of differing collections is matched with the varying surfaces to which the hand-cut vinyl is applied to; the transformation of real car bodywork parts in to surreal wall sculptures is the ultimate representation of the concept. Still there are new developments underway, with the hand-cut vinyl originals being digitised to produce animated NFT collections based upon each original still image. This gives Clark another opportunity to apply some of the knowledge learnt from 20 years in Advertising, by utilising the moving-image skills from creating TV adverts throughout his career.
