ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In the first painting of the "Art From The Edge" series, I bring attention to the marginalization of women in the art space- in this case pushed to the side of the canvas. The title refers to a new low in representation that happened where people from the Middle East were indirectly referred to as “uncivilized” in one of the blatantly racist displays of white exceptionalism that spread across the Western media since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. Fabric background, 3D yarn hair, and beautiful brushwork makes this painting unique and striking. D-rings attached and ready for hanging. Stretched Canvas, no frame.

Ghia Haddad

Ghia Haddad

United Arab Emirates

Ghia Haddad is a visual artist from Dubai. Born in Beirut, she lived through war and displacement and understands the power that art and artists have to spark positive social change through expressive color and imagery. She is passionate about examining identities of underrepresented women through her figurative art. Ghia expresses these identities by infusing her female portrait paintings with flowing fabrics, handmade flowers, beads, string and embroidery, thus challenging the traditional belief that fiber art does not have a legitimate space within high art. She also paints Arabic calligraphy with fabric collages on acrylic pours - vivid expressions in the language of her people; Arabic words mirroring the journey of their experience and the shades of their shifting identities.
