ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Featuring original photography of the skaters at the Undercroft Skate Space on the South Bank in London. This has been a home for skateboarders and graffiti artists for over 40 years and I wanted to create a piece that reflected the chaos and angular architecture of this famous landmark. The original was created by building up layers of scratched and scraped acrylic paint, spray paints, screenprinting, silver leaf and collaged paper on 8mm Plywood Gesso Board. Translating the ideas in my head into real, ‘hold-in-your-hands’ artwork takes many steps. I realised quite quickly that one medium alone would not do the trick. I usually start with taking photos on journeys taken around the world. It takes time to really get under the skin of a place and you have to be in the right frame of mind to spot the unusual things that have a beauty of their own. From here the vision of the final piece starts forming. Once I get home, I digitally collage the photos and plan the composition of the future painting. This can sometimes take many months until I feel ready to produce the final piece for real. During the final creation, things change and evolve in a way that can only happen when creating by hand. Using acrylic paints, spray paints, bespoke designed stencils, screen printing, graph papers and collaged papers, there are many points in the process where the art naturally evolves . The happy mistakes can often bring a new element to the original vision.

Anil Mistry is a mixed media artist based in Berkhamsted, UK. He combines his own photography, acrylic pints, spray paints, stencilled patterns, vintage graph papers and screen printing, to create visually striking mixed media art. Following a childhood interest in art and design, Anil began to experiment in his late teens with typography, graphic design and photography, making gig flyers by layering imagery using photocopiers, scissors and glue. Later, software such as Photoshop and Illustrator became his tools of choice for compositions, starting a commercial career in digital graphic design. With the urge to create physical art again, he has spent the last decade defining an aesthetic and honing his skills to become an accomplished contemporary artist. Rich in detail, texture and depth, Anil’s art features stylistically unusual, misfit and often overlooked elements from cityscapes, environments and everyday objects, that are merged to create beautiful new landscapes. The now 'trademark', oversized palm trees add a Californian / Miami warmth and vibe to all his artworks that evoke a sense of escapism and joy to the viewer.
