I remember when I was about 4 years old my parents put me in a kangaroo's pocket. That was a story I used to tell to friends for years, actually believing it. When I was old enough to understand that it was imposible, I realized I had mixed a story from a cassette tape I used to listen to, photos of kangaroos from Australia where I was born and propably our visits to the zoo. Part of the collection “false memories/fake photos” Dreams, experiences of real life, others’ narratives of past events, childhood photos, lies and fairy tales, all mixed up. All the above have been merged into images and stories which appear to me as real memories, which however can’t be true. So I choose to accept them for what they are, false memories, enjoy the fun part of it, and I often try, as a detective, to find out the different true parts that made that fake story. When it comes to my artwork, I use parts of old photos, edit them and recreate those false memories. I often show the result, a printed photo, to my family and friends, without explaining, letting them assume it is a real photo, and I somehow mess with their memories as well. I also paint some of those memories, revealing further details and senses.

Andromachi Giannopoulou was born in Australia. She went to school in Athens, Greece, and studied Painting in Athens School of Fine Arts. She was awarded a scholarship for studies in Art and Design from the State Scholarship Foundation, and studied Graphic Design and Communication at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. She lives in Athens and works as an art teacher. Her work is the result of a search for the nature of personal experience, by exploring the boundaries between "real life" and memory and on the other hand between "real life" and dream. The border between sleep and alertness, repetitive dreams and space in dreams are some of the elements that fascinate her. It seems that all too often those images that emerge from the subconscious, revolve around a common axis which is the oppression of female sexuality. However she works without an obvious theme, letting the images and feelings reveal all those inevitable distortions of perception.
