The Spanish Series
A few years ago, I spent a wonderful month at the Fundacion Valparaiso, on the grounds of an old olive oil factory in Mojacar, Spain. The parched landscape of a hill there, called La Vieja, so different from my native Hudson Valley environment, became my focus. I made numerous, small on-the -scene watercolor and pencil drawings of the fascinating patterns created by the sharp sunlight and terraced vegetation. Back in the studio I painted large versions of these vistas in acrylic and in oil, on paper. The paintings here are among this series.
