Keyhaven near Lymington is one of my favourite places. It borders the Solent, overlooking the Isle of Wight, which is shown on the horizon in this picture. The narrow strip of water between the sea wall and the Isle of Wight is always busy with yachts and dinghies. On the other side of the sea wall is a nature reserve, teeming with Canada Geese, Eygrets, Curlews, Oyster Catchers....The sound of the sea and the call of the birds, the smell of seaweed and tang of salt air, and the utter peace of the place are irresistible. I have tried to capture the joy and sense of peace this place always elicits in me. The wild pink flowers in the painting appear without fail every July, and contrast beautifully with the vivid green seaweed revealed by the ebbing tide. I textured the canvas with gesso and artists' tissue paper to give the finished piece a 'rippled' effect, which can only be achieved in an original artwork, not in a print or photograph. The deep canvas does not need framing. It looks fresh and modern, and is ready to hang, being fitted with D rings and hanging cord. I use top quality artists' acrylic and finish my work with artists' varnish to protect it from moisture and sunlight.

I cannot remember a time when I did not paint or draw. My work has evolved over the years, but since moving to the coast, I have drawn inspiration from my daily clifftop and beach walks. I love to paint boats, beach huts, and harbours in acrylics in an expressionist semi-abstract way. Having recently studied at the Classical Art Academy I have taken up oil painting of the same subject matter in a classical style. I am lucky to live within a few minutes of the New Forest, and its ancient trees, orange-tinged streams and unique light are also favourite subjects. I also enjoy portraiture using layers of oil and cold wax to create interesting images. My art is an expression of the joy I find in everyday scenes, in the colours and light of my local area.
