"Garish: Views2", 2014; 16" x 20"; Ink, Spray Paint and Acrylic on Canvas There is a proliferation of news media coverage about the violence against black youth - particularly Black Males by White Police officers. I look at these many stories about violence and inequity, and I am saddened by the efforts of my fellow man. I do not know what it is like to grow up as a black child in America. I have had one truly good black friend growing up in my life. Years after I moved away from him, he found me on social media and contacted me. We talked for awhile, and I lost touch with him again afterwards. I often wonder if I should have tried harder to remain in contact, but in truth, we had little in common now. I wonder if that is my own doing, and if the burden of race and racism grinds all of our souls a bit - even those of us who do not envision ourselves as judging others based on their race. This boy wears glasses of green - the opposite of the red-tinged rose-colored glasses. Sometimes, I wish I could see through his eyes.
