About The Artwork

"Garish: Peer", 2015; Acrylic, Ink, and Spray Paint on Canvas; 20" x 16" Disclaimer: This image was inspired by a fetish photographer's original photo of a leather-masked model (Citation Needed) that I found browsing the interwebs for interesting imagery for inspiration for this and other series. The Mask is what struck me about the photo, and how the eye peering out of it, staring, both invites and seems fearful of the viewer. We all have our hang-ups, and some of us keep our deepest desires, whether sexually, emotionally, or physically, tucked away behind layers of skin and emotional distancing. We peer our from these masks, fearful of letting anyone see who we are within. Even our own "Peers" can know very little of the desires and wants that we have - those closest to us may know little of who we actually are within. It makes me wonder who close to me has deep, dark thoughts that linger just below the surface. Because I know I have them, and without my wife, whom I share everything with; I wonder if I would go insane peering out from my mask at the world beyond. I wonder who is already mad from their own facade of "normalcy" - and what a release it would be to let anyone know what we are beneath the surface.
