About The Artwork

"Ororo", 2013, 12" X 16", Colored Pencil on Railroad Board I'm a pretty big comic book nerd, but I enjoy reimaginings of characters sometimes more than their "classic" backstories. Chris Clairmont, one of my favorite comic book authors, wrote of the history of the character "Storm" of the X-Men as a young girl who was worshipped as a goddess by her African tribesmen because of her ability to control the weather. When "Storm" came up as a theme through IllustrationFriday.com, I felt compelled to show the teenage Ororo Munroe with a serene look and complete control over the nimbus of electricity that surrounds her. The model is an African Dancer image that I felt conveyed the expression of one in power, but still young to hold such responsibilities. As a teacher of adolescents, this dichotomy of power with youth holds particular meaning for me. Storm, Ororo Munroe, and X-Men are intellectual properties of Marvel Comics. Used without permission, but a heavy respect for the source material.
