About The Artwork

"Garish: Trajeddy"; 2016; Acrylic, Spray Paint, and Ink on Canvas; 8" x 10" In all acting roles, and in theater itself, there is the concept of comedy and tragedy, two sides of theatrical involvement. Actors are often encouraged to seek out dramatic, or tragic roles for more serious venues - and receive accolades more often than not for these "serious" roles over their more comedic or popular ones. I remember the first time I saw and was impressed with the marvelous Ian McKellen, British Actor and Knight. In college, I saw the film version of Richard III on the screen of a small arthouse theater, the Odeon, in Lansing, MI. McKellen's interpretation of the title character was stellar, and as I was studying acting at the time, I was in awe of his skill and interpretation. The film was not a smash hit, but years later, McKellen would rise to prominence as Magneto in the X-Men films and Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies... But I will always remember him first as the pseudo-Hitler interpretation of Richard III. And while notoriety and paychecks are great, sometimes I think skill and craft is more important than fame and money. The fact that many people will gloss over this stellar performance in preference to his more "popcorn movie" roles is a tragedy, to me.
