He is son of two artists who had Art studio Kos in the city of his birth. His artistic passion began to wake up in his high school years when he first exhibited watercolors and collages named "Attractions Maribor". In the same period he also had several exhibition at art galleries across Slovenia. Since then Mateo’s main passion is painting and he was gradually developing his unique painting style. He is still constantly learning about art, gaining new knowledge and searching for fresh ideas. From his parents he learned about various materials and different techniques to work with, which he is still using today. In his first steps as an artist Mateo was influenced by African art to which he added a piece of "his" fiery temperament. Mateo is using a huge variety of materials while making art and he is in basically in love with mixed media technique. His paintings have strong pulse, intense colors, shapes and are telling stories that are not obvious at first sight. While painting he usually starts with forms that are slowing down. In so-called second phase, he moves increasingly towards even simpler forms and he tries to merge shapes with paint, while the color intensity remains unchanged. During the creation he is constantly playing with color and texture.
