Feel secure ordering from my Saatchi account - I am in a safe city during the war in Ukraine and I continue my work as an artist. The project «Circumstances» is a depiction of the process of identity formation and the authorial paraphrasing of the Roman African playwright Terence’s famous quote "When two do the same thing, it is never to be the same in result" on ”When the two are affected in the same way, we get never the same thing in result”. The sculpture’s elements were absolutely the same glass squares in the beginning and symbolize a clean page of each person's life. They formed in the way we see them now as a result of absolutely identical and simultaneous manipulations. This whole process itself symbolizes the formation of identity in the conditions dictated by circumstances impossible to control. It would seem that as a result, we should get all the objects identical, however, we observe a manifestation of the uniqueness of each. I see this as an analogy of the process of forming an individual inside of a group of people around whom the same invisible conditions of growth are built, both physical and mental.

Sofiia Korotkevych, 28, is an artist based in Lviv. In her art, she explores ways to interact with the natural qualities of the materials she uses. Rather than adjust them to fit her vision, she allows their physical properties to unfold naturally. She sees a philosophy in intervening with the materials, drawing analogies to life itself.
